Acropolis, Home of Greek Gods

Acropolis PharthenonThe Acropolis in the Greek city of Athens is an old fortress that is located on a high hill that overlooks the beautiful and richly historic city of Athens. Also found in this Acropolis are a number of ruins of other ancient buildings which hold a significant amount of architectural and historic importance with the most renowned among these ancient buildings being the Parthenon.

The word Acropolis is coined from two Greek words Akron, which means extremity or edge, while the word polis means city. It is important to note that there are quite a number of other acropolises in Greece, but when one mentions “the Acropolis” it is quickly interpreted to be the Acropolis of Athens simply due to its significance.

The Greek Parthenon is a temple that was built in the Athenian Acropolis, to replace an older temple which was demolished by the Persians, as a dedication to the Greek goddess Athena who was considered by many as their patron.

The construction of this temple started during the height of the Athenian empire 447 BC and completed in 438 BC. It was not until 432 BC however that the decoration of the building started. Of all the classical buildings that have survived in Greece, this is the only one that is considered as the most significant.
